Top Ten Goals and Resolutions For 2014

Hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

1. Rock BEA like nobody's business

This will be my second year attending BEA (Book Expo America, for those who don't know), and I'm determined to make it even better than the first. I want to meet more people and authors and publishers! I want to do it ALL! Who cares if my feet fall off and my arms detach from my shoulders and my body shuts down from exhaustion? It will have been worth it.

2. Read more backlist titles

I need to finally get to all those books I own that have been cluttering up my shelves. I've been drowing in ARCs lately, but hopefully I'll have time soon!

3. On a related noted: buy shelves

Yeah, I don't own shelves right now. My books currently look like this:

I am one pile away from being on Hoarders. I have a book mountain range. I don't think I'll survive the next book avalanche. They're coming for me.

4. Post more regularly

Fact: I am lazy. This blog makes me less lazy. It forces me to put words together and actively do things instead of getting the couch pillows to finally accept me as their own.

5. Draw more

I've been doing art for ages, and all this reading, funnily enough, has reignited my love of it. I've even started a Tumblr for my bookish fanart, and I want to devote more time to it.

6. Write more

I want to find the time to finish all the writerly things I've been working on. Just like with drawing, reading a whole bunch has fired up my own creativity, and I'm determined to finish things and polish things and maybe even get things out in the world.

7. Comment on more blogs

I want to be a better internet socializer! I love so many blogs, and I need to do a better job of showing them the love.

8. Make more bloggy friends

You! And you! And you! LET ME LOVE YOU! Let's be friends! I really like your hair.

9. Expand my readerly horizons

I tend to read a wide variety of genres and categories, but I could definitely stretch myself. Go for paranormal romance, or adult fiction, or even New Adult.

10. Read as many genre books as I can

And yet, I want to stay loyal to my true readerly loves, fantasy and science fiction. I want to champion these books as much as I can. I am just full of nerd pride.

  1. Make me more pretty drawings, please and thank you. <3333

PS: I like your book mountain range but please don't die in it. And if you do, leave all your books and Ginger to me, I promise I'll take good care of them. KISSES MWAH!

  2. I also hope to comment more! I really want to be more involved with the blogging community. Good luck!

  3. First off, I'm totally jealous that you can draw. And, eep, you really do need bookshelves! I want to go to BEA SO BAD. Writing's something I need to do more of this year, too. Good luck on the goals!

  4. You need Luke Danes to make you some book shelves (I really hope you watched Gilmore Girls. If not, please ignore the previous statement).

I am jealous you can draw. It's a skill I've never had. :(

  5. You're going to BEA!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Why did I not know this? This just adds to my ever-growing excitement! Let's just knock these next few months off the calendar, yes?

  6. I need to Post More Regularly too, I'm hoping to work on that this year! I would like to draw more this year as well, I used to all the time but have just not been drawing that much in the past few years. I would like to get into it again. And bloggy friends! I've been able to talk to a lot of wonderful people, and would love to talk to even more of them! Great list! :)

  7. I'm totally with you on the BEA angle. I had a BEA partner last year and it totally made the experience that much better. I'm totally prepared to do way better. I'm also trying to read more of the books that I already one instead of constantly buying new ones and maybe borrowing from the library instead.

  9. Can I be your personal assistant so I can go to BEA too?! I swear, you only need to feed me crackers and I can make myself a pillow nest in an emptied suitcase as a bed. Plus I spent four years in Brooklyn for college so I'm a great NYC guide :)

  10. Great resolutions/goals! I know how a life without shelves feel, my books look like a Christmas tree, since I do not have any shelves for them.....

I like your hair too! Look how pretty your blog is!

    Happy reading!

  11. I really love your choices this week, Gillian! :)

If it's any consolation, despite having recently purchased a massive new combination bookshelf and media unit, I'm still surrounded by ever-growing piles of books all around me. I like to keep my to-read books on a separate bookshelf from the ones I've already read, and as a result of my apparently unstoppable book-buying habit, there are now piles of unread books all over my floor that will no longer fit on my to-read bookshelf. Something tells me I would also benefit from your resolution to 'read more backlist titles'. Well, that or stop buying so many new books, but I would like to make a goal that I at least have SOME hope of keeping! ;)

  12. I love bookshelves, but good ones are expensive and not that easy to find. Try Craigslist, maybe? I had some custom built not very long ago so I could get EXACTLY what I wanted.

    Happy New Year!

  13. Bookshelves are overrated. Think how easy it will be for you to go all Scrooge McDuck with your piles of books right now!

  14. Yay BEA! YAY YAY YAY! Also, I seriously love all of your bookish art and look forward to seeing more of it this year! I hope you get your hands on some pretty shelves tooooo. Your books need a house!

  15. You really are in desperate need of bookshelves haha. I feel the same way about BEA. Since last year was my first year, I felt like I was flailing around every day. I'll probably still do that, but at least this year I know what to expect. Oh, and I love your goal about backlist titles. I read a lot of those, but I love reading others reviews for them as well as sometimes it feels like everyone reads all the same new releases. Good luck with your goals!

  16. Great goals! I just bought some more shelves last year and now my room looks like something a normal person lives in and less like a library exploded. :) I'm hoping to read some older books this year too. Good luck with your goals!

  17. I love your pile of books because it looks like my back room. I want to get bookshelves, but I know I'll be moving within the next two years, and then I want custom shelves.

    great list!

    ReplyDelete
  18. That? Is a ton of freaking books. lol I really want to focus on backlist titles this year too. I always seem to have too many ARCs to get through so I'm trying to cut back on requests too. That was my goal for 2013 too BUT it's a new year, we'll give that goal another try. Good luck with yours!

  20. YO. Let's make a plan to hangout more at BEA this year. MMkay? I mean, hanging in the line with you was fun and all but I barely saw you *cries* (Also, let's hope my unemployment fun/new job fun doesn't get in the way of BEA but such is adult life..but in my dream land right now you and I are frolicking together at BEA)

OMG I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU DO NOT HAVE SHELVES. Wowsa but lols to Lisa's comment. Do that please. I think we need to start a Kickstarter to get you shelves. FORCE THEM UPON YOU.

I'm jealous of your drawing skills. I can't even make nice looking stick figures. *curses The Giver of Cool Skillz*

Love you, love your blog and here's to good things in 2014!!

  23. Love your goals--the one stack away from hoarders had me laughing out loud. :-) You must get shelves sooner than later--then take ALL the pictures to show us how wonderful it looks. I want to read through my books that I own but haven't read. Yay 2014!

  24. Oh my gosh, I LOVE ALL OF YOUR GOALS! :) We've got a couple in common, but seriously, girl... you really need to purchase a bookshelf or something. You'll feel like you've got your whole life in order when you organize it, trust me. :)

  26. I'm going to my first BEA this year and I can't wait!!! And I'm with you on needing to read backlist titles. I have so many books I bought that I was so excited to read, but then just left them on the shelves.

  27. I agree, I need to be better at commenting! And also get better at scheduling and making my posting & reviewing better organized!

    ReplyDelete
  28. This year, I'm also focusing on commenting more, posting more often, being less lazy, and broadening the genres I read, though I do want to just stick to the ones I love most. ;)

And I wish I could go to BEA this year, but no such luck (as of right now).

    Happy 2014!

  29. Buying bookshelves and having a great time at BEA are on my list, too! 2014 is going to be a good year for us, I can tell. *grin* And I SHOULD HAVE put 'comment more' on my list, but somehow it didn't occur to me. Good luck with all of it!!

  30. *floofs hair* Aw thanks! I just got it done :D Also, I really want to buy a bookshelf and put your books on it for you >.> *loves to organize*

  31. Gilly, I will BUY you a bookshelf (well okay not really haha but I would if I COULD.) Those stacks are legit but also a little scary! (I am NOT one to talk. My one huge bookshelf is GROANING under the weight of all these books. Oy vey.)

BEA. BRB SOBBING. I so wanted to go this year, but it doesn't look like it's a possibility. BUT. NEXT YEAR. I will be there, and I'll be that person wearing Harry Potter socks, a TARDIS dress, and clutching a massive, book-ish themed purse. How we do. How we do.

BACK LIST BOOKS. That's one of my biggest goals for this year, too.

AND UM. You BEST write more. I am still like DYING from what you showed me, miss ma'm.

    6. *sits insolently in the comments section, flicking a lighter and playing with guns*

    7. Yeah. Sigh. I'm awful at that. So here I am, being better! :) You'll do just fine.

  35. WE NEED SHELVES GILLIAN. We need to motivate ourselves to get shelves and make sure all of our pretty books have a lovely space in our rooms.

Also... BEA. YES. I should hang out with you more this time around, so let's DO THIS.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I definitely need to read, write, and comment more but I get distracted so easily, time just flies by and I haven't done much of anything! I took a look at your fan art and it's awesome! I bookmarked it / added you on Tumblr. I guess I will have to read most of those books to appreciate them even more. :X Elanor Fitt is spot-on!
