Top Ten Fairytale Retellings I've Read

hosted by The Broke and the Bookish
Fairy tales are my FAVORITE.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer
Well, DUH.

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
This book changed my entire life, I swear. It was one of the first books I remember just loving so much it lit my brain on fire. I read it so much pages fell out.

Just Ella by Margaret Petersen Haddix
Another modern classic I loved as a kid. I really need to reread all the A+ fairy tale retellings of the '90s and early 2000's.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
Look, IDK, but I think fairy tales are always better when you multiply the number of hot guys by three and add raw sexual tension. Just me.

Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge
Remember that thing about the raw sexual tension

Uprooted by Naomi Novik
While apparently this was inspired by a version of "Beauty and the Beast", it's not really a straight-up retelling, though the roots are there in the beginning. But I don't really care, because any chance to shriek about Uprooted and toss it at more people's faces I WILL TAKE. GO READ UPROOTED, IT'S PERFECTION IN BOOK FORM *throws it at your face*

Beauty and Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley
More retellings I read as a child that I don't remember too well other than the fact that I loved them FEROCIOUSLY because Robin McKinley is the master.

Scarlet by Marissa Meyer
Duh x 2

Cress by Marissa Meyer
Duh x 3

Valiant by Sarah McGuire
This book is perfection. It's adorable, action-packed, inspiring, and it feels like a new classic. PLEASE GO READ IT AND LOVE IT K THANX

Fairest by Gail Carson Levine
GCL + fairy tales = yes. Loved the twist on beauty ideals in this. Also, I adore-y Prince Ijori (I'm so sorry)

Snow by Tracy Lynn
I remember nothing about this book other than the fact I loved it as a kid and shipped the ship like WHOA and it involved a magical, slightly Gothic version of London that the heroine ran away to and YES.

Spindle's End by Robin McKinley
My GOD did I love this book as a kid. NARL. ROSIE. EVERYTHING. It's old school, slow and old-fashioned but OH MY GOD is it a great twist on the story. I need to reread this.

  11. Fairy tales (and retellings in general) are my favorite toooooooo. Ella Enchanted will always be a forever favorite! You know I love Cinder/Scarlet/Cress, ACOTAR, Cruel Beauty, and UPROOTED (you intolerable lunatic!). There are quite a few I need to read though! Fairest and Valiant mainly. And omg Snow sounds so good! SPINDLE'S END!!! I LOVED THAT BOOK! I remember next to nothing about it so a reread would def come in handy.

  12. I love Robin McKinley's books so much. As a child, she and Tamora Pierce were my absolute fave authors. And THE BLUE TENT is the first book I ever remember feeling shipp-y about and oh man, I loved all the fairy tale retellings - I had forgotten about SPINDLE'S END. I don't know, reading UPROOTED a few months back really tapped into that feeling for me.

  17. I'd forgotten all about Robin McKinley! When you mentioned Beauty and Rose Daughter a faint bell did peal someone in the cobwebbed recesses of my mind but only when you said Spindle's End did I REMEMBER THE GLORIOUSNESS! THOSE WERE SUCH GOOD BOOKS! Slow, occasionally completely off the point, but marvellous! Ugh. Pre-teen reading days, take me back!
