Top Ten Books I Wish Had Sequels

The complete version of this week's TTT is Top Ten Books I Wish Could Have Had Sequels (they were complete stories but you just could have read more and more about these characters or set in that world). It was totally impossible, because apparently 99% of the books I read are parts of series, which, you know, already HAVE sequels, but I did the best I could.

This is so tough because most of the books I love DO have sequels. There are just so many series out there.

Standalones in desperate need of sequels (in my mind):

The Distance Between Us by Kasie West
Moar Caymen and Xander plz. I could read about those two going on dates and snarking at each other for the rest of my life.

My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick
I would love more swoons between Jase and Samantha, and I'd love to spend more time with the delightful Garrett family.

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
Nine-year-old me is crying for this inside.

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
This book is so beautiful and self-contained, but I'd love to check in on Melinda and see her flourish.

Gorgeous by Paul Rudnick
I would totally love to read about Becky's hilarious exploits as the Queen of England.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
I would LOVE to read about Cath's sophomore year!

Series that have ended but should go on forever:

Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
What are you talking about, six sequels are enough? You know nothing.

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
I've never recovered emotionally from the ending of the series, so obviously I need another one to damage me further.

Protector of the Small by Tamora Pierce
Kel needs to have some sexy times, please.

Classics I want more from:

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
I just love Jane. She's like my literary spirit animal.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Tell me you wouldn't give your soul to read about the actual Austen-written escapades of Lizzy and Darcy running Pemberley. I'd also pay endless amounts of money to read a canon sequel to Persuasion.

I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith
WHO does Cassandra end up with?! *prays for hot gardener*

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
In my mind, Mary and Dickon fall wildly in love and there is une scandale and they meet for secret trysts in the garden and poor Colin just has to deal. I'm sure I can find some suitable fanfic for this somewhere...

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
No, not like Little Men and all those other stupid, useless books. A proper sequel where Jo realizes Bhaer is a bore and Laurie realizes Amy remains THE WORST and they run off together to Paris and solve mysteries and fall in love and Jo becomes a world famous author just like she always dreamed. YES, I STILL WANT THIS. *continues to beat dead horse*

Honorable mentions: The Summer I Became a Nerd by Leah Rae Miller; Poison by Bridget Zinn; Valkyrie Rising by Ingrid Paulson; The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith; The DUFF by Kody Keplinger; Matilda by Roald Dahl, Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore.

  1. Yeah, nine-year-old me is crying inside for an Ella Enchanted sequel, too. (Actually, now that I think about it current me is also crying for it.) ;)

    1. Yes, I need this! Not just for my nine-year-old self, but NOW.

  2. Oh God, it's like you just punched me in the heart with listing "Poison" and Bridget Zinn on that Honorable Mentions list, because I totally remember turning the last page on that book and being so completely sure that there was going to be a sequel, because it was just that good, and how excited I was for it, and then later finding out that there could never be one. :( :( :(

Also, when it comes to sequels to "Pride and Prejudice," apparently "Death Comes to Pemberley" by P.D. James is supposed to be pretty good. And I don't have anything good for "Jane Eyre," by April Lindner's modern day retelling "Jane" (with the book "Catherine" for "Wuthering Heights," as well) is excellent.

    1. I know :( It's so sad.

UGH I HATED DEATH COMES TO PERMBERLEY. NONE of Austen's wit. It's all very dour and serious and boring, honestly. Lizzy is totally subdued and sidelined. No, no, no.

But I've been meaning to try JANE!

  3. I have The Distance Between Us on my list too because Need. More. Sips.

AND YES TO HP AND HIS DARK MATERIALS. There will never be enough.

  4. Distance Between Us! Forever and ever amen.

And you beating a dead horse? YOU!? Never.

Just like me. It's why we'll never ever get along. ;)

  5. I added The Distance Between Us as well! And YES for Harry Potter. I think I would read anything from that world!

  6. So both Gorgeous and Ella Enchanted made my list too! Great minds think alike! Also I guess I need to get my ass in gear and read The Distance Between Us. Every single time you talk about it, I know that I would love it. I mean the two of them snark at each other.

  7. Oh yeah and my link, cause I got all distracted with the snark and what not...

  8. Interesting that some people want sequels (more or better) for books that have sequels! We are never satisfied, are we?!

Here's my TT post: I Poohpooh Sequels.

  9. You.. You EVIL PERSON! Why why why remind me of His Dark Materials? Sobs. I'm still not over it. Most heartbreaking ending ever. There needs to be a sequel :) Awesome list, though. <3

  10. Lovely list. I'm a huge HP fan and could read more, but I think the series ended perfectly.

    1. I'm greedy, and though I definitely agree, I want MORE! Sequels about Harry's kids, prequels about his parents, anything everything I can get!

  11. I'm seriously impressed you came up with so many, because when I saw the topic I was like 'but most books HAVE sequels!' Definitely agree with My Life Next Door. I LOVED Jase and Samantha. I keep hoping maybe Huntley will at least do a companion but with LOTS of J/S time. And Harry Potter should have gone on forever. I don't think I'll ever stop wanting more HP. Also? I laughed so hard at what you said about Little Women. I agree!

  12. Yes to Ella Enchanted and Harry Potter! And I could definitely see the sequel of The Secret Garden going that way. Poor Colin.

  13. YES TO LITTLE WOMEN!!! That old German guy was so freaking random and I couldn't stand it! The first time I read the scene where Laurie proclaims his love for Jo, I just couldn't hold myself together because you could feel how much love he felt for her and how much pain was going through his wild heart when she told him that she will never feel that way. Laurie and Amy never felt right to me...... *clears throat* *catapults across the sky* *releases whale call that causes an earthquake to release my feelings into the world* NEED LAURIE AND JO.

  14. LOL. I love how you cheat every week. This makes me happy.

TDBU: I would read that thing.

MLND: I have yet to read this thing.

EE: (I liked the movie better... *ducks*)

    Speak: READ CATALYST.

HP: "What are you talking about, six sequels are enough?" <- SAID BY NO ONE EVER

HDM: OMG, I want a YA one with more romance and such. And more of the animal companions because yes.

I Capture the Castle: YES. I couldn't remember how the book ended, so I didn't list it, but YES.

Also, canon sequels to anything JA. UMMM, YES.

Sequel to Jane Eyre would be awesome, but she needs to dump Mr. Nubby-Handed Grumpus and get herself a hot hunk of man.

  15. There will never be enough Harry Potter books! Great list. :b

  16. BIG yes to Harry Potter and His Dark Materials. The Amber Spyglass had such a disappointing ending I thought... it really should have gone on for more stories. And oh how I love The Secret Garden. Gosh this is the third time I've seen Jane Eyre on today's topic... I hate to admit but I've yet to read that one. *sigh*

  17. Speak was one that didn't even cross my mind, but now that you mention it, I would totally read a sequel. Harry Potter made my list too. Thanks for sharing.

    My TTT.

  18. Harry Potter, yes! And I agree a thousand times over with Jane Eyre and Little Women. Love, love, love -- and I don't love literature that often (which, I realize, is sad). Great list!

  19. So this isn't exactly a sequel for Ella Enchanted, but Levine wrote three more Enchanted novels!

  20. I didn't end up doing a TTT because I couldn't think of any books I would want to read more of since I'm absolutely swamped with trilogies and series these days (and then funnily enough the 30 Day Challenge I did instead asked what series I wanted more of, so it looks like I didn't really escape the question). But oh my god yes Ella Enchanted!! Not one of the books in the Enchanted universe, but one about Ella. Also all of your series. Yes. So much yes. (I never got over the ending of His Dark Materials. I think I cried for days. That might be an exaggeration, but it felt like it)

    ReplyDelete
  21. YES MORE DISTANCE BETWEEN US.

    And: PRINCE CHAAAAAAAR
I still ship him and Ella. And still fondly remember how much I loved him. Well, love him. My crush will never end.

And Fangirl -- that book just hit so close to home. Cath is pretty much my doppelganger, so it goes without saying that this is a brilliant pick.

HP and HDM? YES. Both Harry and Lyra's worlds could stand for more escapades/sequels. I did not know you were a fellow Pullman lover. Clearly this is another reason we are brain twins.

And you know how I feel about Laurie and Jo. We need to write this. It has to happen. BEFORE I DIE, LAURIE AND JO WILL BE TOGETHER. Even if it's just in my headcanon, but I'd prefer on paper. For other people to read and go, "THIS IS HOW IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FROM THE BEGINNING."

  22. Fairest is a sort-of sequel to Ella Enchanted if you squint. It's about the sister of Ella's Ayorthian friend, and the audiobook is aces (half of it is singing, so if you decide to check it out, definitely go for the audio version).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I actually have read Fairest. I would argue it's barely a companion, as the only crossover character is Areida, though it's set in the same universe. I'm holding out for more Ella and Char!
