Top Ten Greatest Declarations of Love

hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

This was the most fun TTT to research ever. I opened up all my fave books and reread the kissy scenes. Best job ever.

You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope.

--Persuasion by Jane Austen

THIS WHOLE LETTER IS THE MOST ROMANTICALLY CHARGED, EVOCATIVE PASSAGE JANE AUSTEN EVER WROTE AND IT MAKES MY TOES CURL IN MY SHOES

So after, when he whispers, "You love me. Real or not real?"
I tell him, "Real."

--Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

I'm crying everywhere

"I have a dream," he said slowly. "I persist in dreaming it, although it has often seemed to me that it could never come true. I dream of a home with a hearth-fire in it, a cat and dog, the footsteps of friends--and you!"

"I've loved you since that day you broke your slate over my head."

"I don't want sunbursts and marble halls. I just want you."

--Anne of the Island by L.M. Montgomery

ANNE AND GILBERT 5EVER ORIGINAL OTP DON'T TOUCH  ME I'M TOO EMOTIONAL

"Is it Rilla-my-Rilla?" he asked, meaningly.
...
"Yeth."

--Rilla of Ingleside by L.M. Montgomery

Rilla being so overwhelmed with feeling upon Kenneth coming back from war and asking her if she loves him that her childhood lisp comes back UGHHH I AM RUINED

"You intolerable lunatic," he snarled at me, and then he caught my face between his hands and kissed me.

--Uprooted by Naomi Novik

There's so much wrong with me because that's just about the most romantic line to me EVER

When I flirt with you, it's not a joke, and when I say I want to know you, it's not just because I'm surious. I'm not going to pretend I know how this ends, and I don't have a freaking clue if it's possible to fall in love over email. But I would really like to meet you, Blue. I want to try this. And I can't imagine a scenario where I won't want to kiss your face off as soon as I see you.

Just wanted to make that perfectly clear.

--Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Squeeeeeeeeeeeee

“My soul sees its equal in you.”

“What are you doing to me, you plague of a girl?” he whispered.
“If I’m a plague, then you should keep your distance, unless you plan on being destroyed.” The weapons still in her grasp, she shoved against his chest.
“No.” His hands dropped to her waist. “Destroy me.”

“You honestly expect me to breathe in a world without air?”

“I love you, a thousand times over. And I will never apologize for it.

--The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh

Yes, I chose three quotes from TWATD. Of course I did. Because this ship DESTROYS ME.

I claim you. To whatever end.

--Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas

hahahahahahahahahaahbyeI'mfine

"I thought they'd killed you. I lost my temper."

--Emperor Mage by Tamora Pierce

This is just the greatest most romantic quote e v e r.  VERALIDAINE, MASTER OF UNDERSTATEMENT. My very old, very re-read childhood copy of this book automatically falls open to this scene.

She called Gansey.
"Blue?" he said.
Just his voice. Her heart tethered itself. Not completely, but enough to stop quivering so much. She closed her eyes.
"Take me somewhere?"

"I wish you could be kissed, Jane," he said. "Because I would beg just one off you. Under all this." He flailed an arm toward the stars. "And then we'd never say anything about it again."

--The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater

Leeeeeeave me heeeeeeere to diiiiiiiie

He retrieved the object and held it up under the feeble interior cab light. It was a small white plastic container. Adam twisted off the lid. Inside was a colorless lotion that smelled of mist and moss. Replacing the lid with a frown, he turned the container over, looking for more identifying features. On the bottom, Ronan's handwriting labeled it merely: manibus.
For your hands.

--Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater

This is a declaration of love FIGHT ME

"I am never, ever going to make things easy for you, Seaweed Brain."

--The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan

No seriously leave me here with my feelings I cannot

"Once upon a time, there was a girl who talked to the moon. And she was mysterious and she was perfect, in that way that girls who talk to moons are."

--Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins

Cricket Bell is better than all actual boys, it is known

[She] gave a small gasp when he leaned forward, his lips an inch away from hers. "I will die for you," he whispered.
She cupped his face in her hands. "But promise me you'll live first. Because nothing we are about to do is going to be easy and I need you by my side.”

--Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta

*sobs so much that even my own tears are sobbing*

“Our bodies aren't strangers,' he said, his voice ragged. 'Our spirits aren't strangers'. He held her face in his hands. 'Tell me what part of me is stranger to you and I'll destroy that part of me.'
And she wept to hear his words.”

“Do you love me?’ he asked instead. ‘Because if you don’t, I’d wait until you did. I’d wait weeks and months and years.”

--Quintana of Charyn by Melina Marchetta

this books is chockfull of OTPs and they ALL HURT

“If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more.”

--Emma by Jane Austen

HALP

“I choose you over everyone.”

--Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

forever sobbing

"I am in love with you, and I cannot imagine being in love with anyone else. It would be like becoming someone else. Your name was the first word for love I ever knew."

--Unmade by Sarah Rees Brennan

I HAVE TO END THIS POST I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE I HAVE TOO MANY FEELINGS

BONUS: two of my favorite TV show declarations

The classic:

SETH COHEN STANDING ON A COFFEE CART

And the extraordinarily painful:

Don't tell me this wasn't a declaration of love, I will fight you on this too

Honorable mention for best worst, least successful, terrible but wonderful nonetheless:

"You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you."
--Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

like, dude, A+ intentions, F on the actual execution (you could have done without insulting her whole family??? small proposal tip??)

  6. Your reactions to all of these declarations are hilarious! I haven't read Uprooted yet, but I swear that one line is making me want to camp outside of Barnes & Noble, wait until they open up in 9 hours, rush inside, and buy that book. The TWATD and Rowaelin feels are unbearable!!! Also, I'm seeing Finnikin of the Rock on a lot of lists, and I'm regretting leaving it on my shelf to collect dust for the past couple of years. Oops.
I really love this list, Gillian!

  22. Yep, Uprooted has the sexiest of the steamy kiss scenes in the history of ever. And, see, I take that scene in the 100 as an affirmation of the previously-declared love. Because when Clarke runs at Bellamy and wraps him in that huge hug and he has that moment of "OMG is this really happening" hope in his eyes and then just embraces her.....L-O-V-E. I watched that scene, like, five times in a row. *happy sigh*

    ReplyDelete
  23. So many great quotes !! There's nothing wrong with you for loving that Uprooted quote. There has to be a certain level of love and trust between two people so that what would sound like an insult coming from anyone else actually sounds fond and loving. It's like "you're impossible, but I love you anyway" and it's awesome !

    ReplyDelete
  24. Aww so many beautiful quotes ;-) I love Gansey and Blue, I love all of her raven boys <3 I love Lola and the boy NeXT door, but of the three books in that series is Josh my favorite. Love him so much <3 I love Emma by Jane Austen. She is so Lucky!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh, sigh. <3 I love this post Gillian :D Thank you so much for sharing. You are awesome :D SO MUCH LOVE. Gaaaaaansey. <3 My precious. And Peeta quote. Love it. And Percy Jackson. Sigh. So much swoon :D

  26. Such a great list! I love so many of these, especially Lola and the Boy Next Door and Mockingjay - it still kills me! The quotes from The Raven Boys books also make me so excited to continue on with the series as I've only read the first one so far! And that The 100 moment was so heartbreaking - I just need them together right now!
