Review: Destroy Me by Tahereh Mafi

Review: Destroy Me by Tahereh Mafi
Rating: ★★★

Set after Tahereh Mafi's Shatter Me and before Unravel Me, the spellbinding sequel, Destroy Me is a novella told from the perspective of Warner, the ruthless leader of Sector 45.

In Shatter Me, Juliette escaped from The Reestablishment by seducing Warner—and then putting a bullet in his shoulder. But as she'll learn in Destroy Me, Warner is not that easy to get rid of . . .

Back at the base and recovering from his near-fatal wound, Warner must do everything in his power to keep his soldiers in check and suppress any mention of a rebellion in the sector. Still as obsessed with Juliette as ever, his first priority is to find her, bring her back, and dispose of Adam and Kenji, the two traitors who helped her escape. But when Warner's father, the Supreme Commander of The Reestablishment, arrives to correct his son's mistakes, it's clear that he has much different plans for Juliette. Plans Warner simply cannot allow.

My review of SHATTER ME

Oh, WOW. I almost loved this e-novella better than SHATTER ME. I loved having the opportunity to get inside Warner’s head. I described him as “deliciously creepy”, and on the outside, he is, but he’s very complex. He feels, yet he hates the fact that he does. He has a horrible psychopath of a father. He’s obsessively in love with Juliette. He tries to be a cold, unfeeling leader. He’s humanized by his second in command, the lovable, stuttering Delalieu.

“My heart is beating quickly now, and it doesn’t feel natural. I do not react this way. I do not lose control.”

Basically, the guy’s got layers.

I loved learning more about the Reestablishment and how they function. It’s a hopeless empty organization where human emotion has no place.

As expected, the writing is heart-achingly beautiful. The contrast between Warner’s deep, organized thoughts and Juliette’s erratic diary entries is beautiful. The words practically throb with emotion. There’s tension, action, painful longing. Warner is the one being pulled to pieces by a girl- by “a beautiful disaster.”

This is absolutely necessary reading if you liked SHATTER ME and intend to read UNRAVEL ME. It gives so much insight into Warner’s motives, his background, and the complications of his future.

It’s probably blasphemous of me, but I might be shipping Juliette and Warner (Wuliette? Jarner?). Don’t get me wrong, Adam is wonderful, and he has significantly fewer issues than Warner, but OH GOD, the intensity of Warner’s feelings for Juliette…

“But there’s something about the way she looks at me that always make me feel insignificant, as if she’s the only one who’s realized I’m entirely hollow inside. She’s found the cracks in this cast I’m forced to wear every day, and it petrifies me.
That this girl would know exactly how to shatter me.”

The two of them are electric. They’re damaged and damaging. Hopefully they get a powerful scene together in UNRAVEL ME. I just… when does it come out again? How can I get my greedy hands on a copy like now?

And because I can't stop bragging:

  1. Ahh! The bragging makes me so jealous! Lucky you. No, but seriously, I kind of loved Warner even though he was so evil. I'm so excited to read this!

  7. In my opinion, I always felt that Warner has more depth than Adam, even in Shatter Me. Adam is portrayed as the perfect boyfriend why Warner has characteristics that just makes you want to cheer him on.
