An Ode to Hermione Granger (And a Magical Giveaway)
Today, September 19, is Hermione Granger's birthday. (It is also the day I hit 100,000 pageviews, but we should focus on Hermione). Most kids who grew up reading Harry Potter, like I did, wanted to be Hermione. I was a lot like her when I was younger. I really loved books and reading, and sometimes I was a huge know-it-all. All those things are still true today. Also true today? Hermione is still completely, totally awesome.
17 reasons why I love Hermione Granger and want to be her when I grow up:
1. She doesn't let twitchy little ferrets like Malfoy walk all over her.
2. She's the voice of the compassion in the series, and is the only one willing to voice things that other wizards wouldn't dare (S.P.E.W.!)
3. She has no patience for the idiocy of mankind.
4. She always willing to teach those with less brain power a lesson. Which is everybody.
5. She's a bit close-minded and didactic at times, but she learns to change her mind.
6. She gives epic bitchface.
7. She can swoon with the best of us.
8. She gives absolutely withering insults.
9. She's absolutely brilliant, and works hard to define herself by her brain.
10. She totally stresses out about school.
11. She finds boys just as confusing as I do (though she gives great relationship advice).
12. She will take you down a peg or twelve if need be.
13. She's a deeply loyal friend.
14. Despite the fact that she's brilliant, she's also insecure.
15. She saves the day, like, every day.
16. She's willing to sacrifice anything for her friends.
17. Because they're stronger together than they are apart.
I just love how real of a character Hermione is, so strong and so vulnerable at the same time. She care immensely what people think of her, and yet, despite that fear of being rejected, she continues to be herself-- even when herself is irritating, swotty, and meddlesome. Plus, she's semi-based on young J.K. Rowling herself. So. Obviously she's the best.
In celebration of Hermione's birthday, and my own blogoversary month, I'm giving away ONE HARRY POTTER SPECIAL EDITION PAPERBACK. Not once boxed set, mind you. Just one book. But you can choose ANY BOOK YOU LIKE! This giveaway is international.

Congrats to you!!! And Happy Birthday to Hermione! I love how she doesn't put up with anyone's bull crap. :)
ReplyDeleteI'd love a copy of the first one. I had it when it first came out in paperback but it disappeared at some point.
Yeah Hermione! #12 is one of my favorite gifs in all of gifdom. Not just anyone could get away with smacking the Chosen One, but Hermione was like DUDE PLEASE *WHACK*
ReplyDeleteLove Hermione for her smarts, showed us studious kids can be cool too and slapping Draco was awesome! I'd probably pick whichever of my hardcovers is the most worn *goes to stare at my Harry Potter books*.
ReplyDeleteI love how brave and loyal Hermione and obviously how smart she is! I would love the first book!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE THIS POST!!! I love her for every amazing reason you mentioned in this post and more. She is the most amazing, dynamic character of the series and I'd give anything to be friends with her if she were real. So I'm settling for being friends with her in my mind. And I would choose book 6. :)
ReplyDeleteSounds a bit shallow, but I loved her for her smarts. I couldn't possibly explain how much I emulated her. <3
ReplyDeleteI'd pick...... Order of the Phoenix because my hardcover's a bit worn. *strokes lovingly and whispers soothing words*
You said it all, really. You managed to transmit everything I love about Hermione in a simple post :) She's a character that taught me to be strong and determined even when things seemed to be a little bit dark. She's the most human character I've ever read :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I would choose, perhaps, The Prisoner of Azkaban and I'm only choosing this one because I already have The Order of the Phoenix in English and decided to choose one of my fav. from the series that I don't own in English!
Congrats on reaching 100,000 page views and thank you for the giveaway and wonderful post ;-)
XX Ner
She's smart and taught me that there's nothing wrong with being in love with reading just because other people aren't.
ReplyDeleteI would choose Chamber of secrets since that's the prettiest new cover in my mind.
Hermione's one of my favourite characters, for so many of these reasons! I'd have to pick The Order of the Phoenix, because the spine fell off my copy (it's from 2002 and very loved, if that's an excuse! :P).
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, I love her for so many reasons. She showed me that being smart isn't a bad thing but that it also doesn't have to define you. There will be people that will like you for you, not just because you're smart. But that's really just the tip of the iceberg.
ReplyDeleteAHHH how to pick?! Either Deathly Hallows, Prisoner of Azkaban, or Sorcerer's Stone.
Congrats on your blogoversary - I know it's not today but congrats nevertheless! I love Hermione as well and I'm so happy that you reminded me about her birthday (not that I knew anyway) because Hermione is definitely a character to be celebrated. She taught me so much and I can always rely on her for giving me the best advice ever. And I grew up with her! It's hard to detach myself from such strong memories of childhood.
ReplyDelete*sobs* Damn you. Now I have to go home and watch Harry Potter since the epic re-read isn't happening for another two months. I love Hermione. *sniff* Okay ANYWAYS... 100k is awesome. Big congratulations!!! :D
ReplyDeleteSTAHP YOU'RE KILLING ME WITH THIS POST.
ReplyDeleteHermione is the best because there's literally no way Harry Potter could have stopped Voldy without her. Seriously, the series would be over at the end of book one if it wasn't for her. So happy birthday, Hermione, we salute you.
Also, congrats to you too, lady!
Hermoine is my favorite because she's the only one of the trio that I never got annoyed with (unlike Harry and Ron and their stupid Harrying and Roning), and she's a badass and hyper-smart even though being muggle-born didn't prepare her for Hogwarts in the slightest.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I'd probably pick either Sorcerer's Stone or Chamber of Secrets because I'm pretty sure I've lost my original copies of them somehow (and they are also conveniently the only two new covers that I prefer to the original ones).
DeleteHermione is fantastic... I loved her being smart and bright and intelligent and a bit snoty at first and how she came to be the anchor for both Harry and Ron, if for different questions. And goodness, even if the punching wasn't it the book, it's my fave part of the movie!
ReplyDeleteI'd choose either Prisoner of Azkaban or The Deathly Hallows!
Congrats on your Blogoversary month!
Hermione was my idol growing up. She was smart and brave but not full of herself. She was always fantastically portrayed in both the books and the movie. If I had to choose one it would have to be The Deathly Hallows.
ReplyDeleteAlso, congratulations on the milestone!!
I love that you included weaknesses as well as strengths on this list. The amazing thing about Hermione is how realistically human she is.
ReplyDeleteI just love this post! Completely agree with all your reasons!
ReplyDeleteOh and congrats on the 100,000 page views!
ReplyDeletePlainly put, Hermione is a BAD-ASS!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on 100,000 page views. I know I already said it on Twitter, but I'm saying it again.
And I'd love Deathly Hallows for the sentimental reasons or Prisoner of Azkaban as my copy is falling apart.
Congrats on your page views! I love her for pretty much every reason you mentioned, but mostly for her loyalty and her intelligence.
ReplyDeleteI'd love The Deathly Hallows. :)
i love hermione because she never has such a social conscious, she never undermines her intelligence & she basically kicks ass. i'd pick Order of Phoenix
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your page views!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE HERMIONE BECAUSE SHE IS AWESOME! She's very smart, badass and loyal and I totally agree with all the reasons that you said. :)
The book I would probably choose is either The Deathly Hallows or The Goblet of Fire.
I adore Hermione and look up to her! She is the strong, she does not give up, she is ambitious, she has the best friends in the world! I could go on and on about her good features! The only thing I don't like about her is that her pet is a cat=)
ReplyDeleteThe book I would probably choose is either The Sorcerer's Stone or The Goblet of Fire. Cann't decide so it's up to you=)
I suspect that no matter what I think of the series as a whole, I'm going to like this girl. :)
ReplyDeleteWay to go, you made me cry. I love Hermione. I still want to be her when I grow up. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go reread the books and rewatch the movies...
ReplyDeleteHermoine reminds me of myself- stubborn, strong, unyielding, friendly, supportive, smart, etc.... I think I'd choose Order of the Phoenix. Thanks for the opportunity to win.
ReplyDeleteHermione is amazing - she's so complex and I absolutely adore her! She's smart and she's not afraid to stand up for what she believes in. But at the same time, she's vulnerable and she's gone through a lot. One of my all time fav characters<3 thanks for the lovely giveaway!
ReplyDeleteHermione is a superwoman, she´s amazing, smart, strong, loyal, with a beautiful mind and soul, she fight for she thinks right. She is perfect and still she grown up and got better.
ReplyDeleteI'd choose either Prisoner of Azkaban or the Order of Phoenix
Thanks for this awesome giveaway
This post is awesome!!! I love hermione because she doesn't care that she's a bookworm, nerd and know it all. She doesn't hide from it. She's an amazing friend and compassionate! Also, all these gifs make me want to both reread ALL the books and also rewatch ALL the movies!!!
ReplyDeleteOh and I would choose Prisoner of Azkaban -- that one was my favorite in the series!
I love how brave and determined she is! Girl power!
ReplyDeleteNot sure which I would choose yet!
I wish I had grown up on this series....Hermione is such a fantastic geek girl icon!
ReplyDelete100,000 page views! That's a bunch! Congratulations! :)
ReplyDeleteHermione is the icon of girl power, who isn't afraid to be who she is and stands up to challenges, but is also down to earth.
The Brightest Witch! Congrats! :D I love Hermione! She's bright and a geek like me. Thanks for the chance to win. I like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows
ReplyDelete-Dannielle
This is probably the best blog post I have read in a long while. Hermione has been my role model for a long time. She is so quirky and always is herself, no matter if others tease her. I love all of the gifs and memes that you chose for this post - they embody Hermione perfectly.
ReplyDeleteCheck out my blog: http://booksavvyblog.blogspot.com/
Congratulations! This is great! I love Hermione and wish I was more like her. For now it's juts me trying to catch up, but I can only dream right ;)
ReplyDeleteI always adored Hermione. I am VOWING to re-read the books soon, like in the next few months or so. I NEED TO DO THIS. (Confession: I've never seen any of the movies past the 5th one, because I'm a big baby and I cried reading THIS POST SO. I know I'd bawl so much during them.) I love this post, Gillian. LOVE. IT. I'm so glad I read the books when I did, BUT I really wish I'd read them when I was younger so I, too, could have had that bond with Hermione. <3
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic post! I love Hermione because she is strong, intelligent, yet normal (for example, her being hurt because her crush didn't like her back).
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway chance! I would probably pick the first book, Sorcerer's Stone.
I would like the first in the series! Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteShe's smart and not a girly girl. She's fierce but sweet. I think I would like the first book.
ReplyDeleteI like that she's smart and speaks her mind. I'd pick the first book.
ReplyDeleteArantza
I love that she's a great example of a good, smart person :)
ReplyDeleteI'd choose the first or the last one!
~Karina V
This post is the best <3
ReplyDeleteI love Hermione because she's real and normal and down to earth and so relatable. I'd also choose book one. Then you so much for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI would pick The Goblet of Fire, and I love Hermione because she's a brilliant and inspiring (not to mention strong FEMALE) character; she's not only the smartest person in her year, but she's also a badass and an amazing witch, and just generally amazing.
ReplyDeleteCongrats!!!
ReplyDeleteHermione is my favorite ever character for a billion reasons (I'm sure you would understand all of them). She's brilliant and Rowling's brilliant.
