Baking the Books: Percy Jackson Cupcakes

Welcome to Baking the Books, where I bake things inspired by my favorite novels! Since I do a lot of reading and a lot of baking, it was only a matter of time before the two things overlapped. It's just part of my evil plot to get books involved in every single aspect of my life.

Last time on Baking the Books: Defiance by C.J. Redwine Sticky Buns

It's been a while since I Baked any Books, mostly because I haven't had any time or any really good ideas. But then I binge-read the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan, and to say I became somewhat obsessed would be an understatement. I haven't read that many words all in a row in a looooong time. Anyway, one of my favorite elements of the series is Percy's relationship with his mom. And one of the things that most shows off their bond is their insistence that there is such a thing as blue food, and the fact that they go out of their way to eat it.

So I made Percy some blue cupcakes!

I followed this recipe for blue velvet cupcakes exactly, though my cupcakes came out WAY BLUER than hers did. Then I made some tuile cookies for toppers, dying them sea green so they'd look like seaweed. Because Percy's the son of the sea good, he's got sea green eyes, and Annabeth calls him Seaweed Brain, and Percabeth is law.

Look! Blue cupcakes with a blue book!

Blue cupcakes fully undressed, then accesorized with some whipped cream because I was too lazy to make cream cheese frosting:

All the cupcakes!

They are SO BLUE inside. I hope Mama Percy would approve.

    1. It's also hard to MAKE blue cupcakes! If you use straight blue food coloring, it doesn't turn out that blue. But the mix of food colorings I used (royal blue plus a smidge of violet) turned out SUPER blue!

  8. These look so good! I haven't ever had anything in that color of blue but always a first time for everything! Especially when velvet cupcakes are my FAVOURITE. Yum! The tuile cookies you have on top as the seaweed are super cool too! Ahhh I'm getting hungry now.

  9. It's been awhile since I read the Percy Jackson books, so I'd forgotten about the blue food. They look great, love the combo of the dark blue and lighter green. Another Baking the Books home run!

  11. I WANT BLUE CUPCAKES. ESPECIALLY BLUE PERCY JACKSON THEMED CUPCAKES. Seriously, these look AMAZING. You did a great job with them - and especially in making me want to eat them all. (Which now begs the questions: (1) Why do I not live closer to you and (2) Why is there not some way to instantly send food cross-country?)
