Top Ten Popular Authors I've Never Read

Hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

I know. I know. And I call myself a book blogger. Some day? I own a copy of The Fault In Our Stars, but I'm completely terrified of it. Mayhaps before the movie comes out.

I have a signed copy of her latest, The Moon and More, yet for some reason it just never called to me. None of Sarah's books have, and I'm not sure why. They were super popular all through my teen years, but... Eh. I don't know. SOME DAY.

I am DETERMINED to read her books this year. I just know I'll adore them and that her words are gorgeous and unique and romantic and IT'S HAPPENING. It is soooo happening.

I know. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.

I've sworn to start reading the Lumatere Chronicles as soon as possible. I've been told the ships are epic, and, well, that's the magic word for me.

She's written like a million books and I have read zero of them, but I own a few of her hot alien books, so maybe someday. I'm more curious about her Covenant series, though, so I may start there if I ever do start.

Actually, by the time this post posts, number 7 will no longer be accurate, since I'll have finished Panic by this point. But as of the time I made this graphic, I have not read any Lauren Oliver.

Verse + issue books = not Gillian's cup of coffee, but one day I might change my mind.

I'm actually very interested in her books, though I'm not sure where to start. The ones with the fey people and iron and love triangles? The vampire ones? Should I wait for the dragons? I do like dragons.

I'm only hurting myself, at this point. These sound like so much fun and the covers are adorbs.

I know so very little about her Mara Dyer series, but so many others are totally obsessed with it, so I'm planning on hopping on the bandwagon someday.

Honorable mentions: Ransom Riggs, James Dashner, Colleen Hoover, Beth Revis, Courtney Summers, Patrick Ness.

  1. The only author on your list that I have read besides Sarah Dessen, is Ally Carter and I'm just going to mention that she is a must-read author! Her books are AMAZING! The GG books are one of the first YA books I ever read and they are the best! If you read them, I hope you LOVE them! They just got better with every book! :)

  2. I'm about to die because you haven't read Gallagher Girls or Heist Society yet. YOU MUST READ THEM, GILLIAN.

On another note, I'm surprised that you're the second blogger I've already seen who hasn't read Sarah Dessen (not counting myself).

  3. Sarah Dessen! I remember wanting to read her books years and years ago and just...never did. John Green also made my list this week; heard great things about TFiOS but yeah, dunno when I'll get around to it...

  4. I haven't read any Sarah Dessen, either! *dodges tomatoes* Her books just don't really interest me though...sorry not sorry? Laini Taylor is one of my favorite authors but her books and style of writing aren't for everyone, I can objectively say. Same with Lauren Oliver. You either love it or hate it.

  5. We have a surprising amount of similarities. Glad I'm not the only one that hasn't read John Green or Markus Zusak.

  6. Gasp - what is Laini Taylor doing on this list! Oh you've got to read her books :-)

  7. The only ones I've read are Green, Dessen, Oliver, and Hodkin. THE FAULT IN OUR STARS will, of course, make you cry, and Dessen's books are amazing! I'm hoping to read Laini Taylor's books SOON, especially with the series ending next month (I think).

  8. Some of these I can't believe...Laini Taylor? Melina Marchetta? Julie Kagawa?

But then I remember all the books I've been holding out on, for reasons of time or whatever... and I sink in my own little puddle of shame. (puddle because of the wetness of Cali. right now)

  9. John Green + Laini Taylor + Sarah Dessen + Melina Marchetta + Markus Zusak + Lauren Oliver = Jane Austen we are even.

  10. I haven't read Julie Kagawa or Jennifer Armentrout either! Oops. I can highly recommend Lauren Oliver and Michelle Hodkin though!

  11. JLA would have made my list if I hadn't read Frigid awhile back (TBH I'm wishing I hadn't read that one) And Gillian? No John Green? Are you living under a rock? TFIOS was beautiful but I honestly have no desire to read his other books.I did read Sarah Dessen's latest one over the summer. I liked it though it was kind of slow in some parts. I NEED to read the Mara Dyer series SOON. I also need to read Ransom Riggs' series and Colleen Hoover's books.

  12. I've read five of these! *self five* I'm pretty proud of myself and pretty shocked at you tbh :P BUT. I am with you in the Zusak shame zone. Except I don't care too much xD I'm taking that one on my own time. (Left it off my list though so people wouldn't jump on me. lalalalaaaaaaaa)

  13. So I haven't read John Green, Sarah Dessen, Jennifer Armentrout, Lauren Oliver or Ally Carter either! *high-five*
Julie Kagawa... I did not like her fairy series but I was in the minority. Her vampire series is FUN though and book two rocks my socks.

  14. Thank goodness I'm not hte only one who hasn't read John Green. I'm just scared. :/ Also haven't read most of these! I do have to say... you MUST read Jennifer Armentrout. :) i LOVE her lux series and covenant series so you can't go wrong with any of them!

  15. YOU haven't read John Green? I actually just read TFiOS, because my bestie made me. Yes, you will cry, but you will also laugh your ass off and the ship is one of the most epic ships ever! I really, truly feel like this is a Gillian book in all of it's glory. I'll send you tissues and virtually hold you hand at the end of it all, but you must read this book!

  16. I recognized 3 names from this list, Woohoo!!!! :D John Green, Lauren Oliver, and Sarah Dessen. I'm not going to push the whole John Green thing because I haven't read TFIOS, but you must read atleast one book by Sarah Dessen.

  17. I think I read 10 pages of an Ellen Hopkins book once before deciding it wasn't for me. I thought I would enjoy a book written in verse, but I just found it really hard to read.
I haven't read Melina Marchetta either--I'm a little overwhelmed by how popular the series seems to be!

  18. Oh darling, it's so okay to have not read Markus Zusak, I haven't either! I have however read John green, Sarah Dessen, Julie Kagawa and Ally Carter. On the Kagawa aspect, although I've read The Iron Fey, if you haven't read anything remotely fairy-like and hate cheesy names, The Blood of Eden might be a better place to start; I haven't started there yet myself but I've heard it's much better than The Iron Fey, so give it a shot. Rubbing salt into the wound, Ally Carters Gallagher Girls series is pretty sweet and fantastic, you're missing out girl! :D
This is a great collection, and all the other authors you've mentioned I've never read, even your honorable ones, except Beth Revis and Patrick Ness, both a little bit of a let down for me, but it's great to see I'm not alone. I hope you get to them all soon though, hopefully.. *crosses fingers, legs, toes and eyes* ;)

  19. I cannot imagine you falling head over for Kagawa. She is a guilty pleasure read FO SHO. I'd start with Markus if I were you! Specifically, I Am The Messenger. LIFE CHANGING, YO.

  20. OH wow, this is worse than I thought. hahaahaha
The only author I've never read on your list (who I've heard about) is Ellen Hopkins.

  21. Add The Book Thief to the top of your to-read list!!! I haven't read John Green yet either. *sigh*

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'll totes buddy-read Finnikin of the Rock with you, if you like. It seems like a very "me" sort of book and I actually bought it aaaages ago but haven't read it either.

I've read a few of these (John Green! Dessen! Taylor, Zusak, eeeee!) and may try JLA soon since a co-blogger lurrrrrves her, but Iiiii have no desire to try Hopkins tbh. Verse and I don't mesh well.

  23. Our lists are nearly identical, except I've read Laini Taylor and Julie Kagawa (two of my favs, actually, especially Laini), oh and also Jen Armentrout. I have a copy of THE FAULT IN OUR STARS because the ebook was on sale a while back, but I honestly have little desire to read it. His books just don't sound like my thing. I tried reading THE BOOK THIEF but found it really boring. *ducks away from bloggers throwing pointy things at my head* I don't know if I'll pick it up again...

  24. I really want you to read Mara Dyer just so I can read your reaction to it (that was probably the meanest review I ever wrote). I'm shocked you haven't read Laini Taylor's series! I've only read the first one, but I have a feeling it's a series you'd really love!

  25. MELINA MARCHETTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Seriously, Gillian, Lumatere may actually have THESE BOOKS WERE WRITTEN SPECIFICALLY FOR GILLIAN BERRY written across all the covers in invisible ink, I'm not sure, I haven't checked yet. It seems likely though.

Sorry to all the other people on this list, I'm sure you are all just as epic in others' eyes but step aside, Melina Marchetta is an untouchable goddess.

    ReplyDelete
  26. YOU GET TO READ MELINA MARCHETTA FOR THE FIRST TIME!!! I'm sort of jealous. She's amazing.
Also, Mara Dyer series, The Fault in Our Stars, and anything JLA = must reads!

  27. I love The Book Thief, so I am glad you apologized ;)

  28. I have only read Jennifer Armentrout and John Green from this list! Oh man. It sounds really bad when I say it in text - particularly since not many of these are in my list, so it's these PLUS the ten I shared. *plots way to quit job and read full time because this is just ridiculous*

Also I really loved The Fault In Our Stars, but wasn't crazy about Paper Towns and didn't make it through Looking for Alaska or An Abundance of Katherines. Which is my really long-winded way of saying that if you are only going to read one JG book, make it TFIOS. Everyone I know (a very diverse group including my mother, a male colleague, my most sarcastic friend and a devout Sarah Dessen fan) has loved it, and it kick-started me reading a couple of books a week after not reading for like a year. So there's that.

Armentrout.... did you ever watch that show Roswell? Well imagine that crossed with Twilight with a dash of Katniss' obliviousness to her feelings, and you've got the Obsidian series. Entertaining, definitely fun, but also not the deepest of reads!

Looking forward to seeing what you think of Panic, because I've been putting it in and taking it out of my online book basket for like a month now!

  29. 1. We should read TFiO together. I don't want to cry alone. :(
    2. *whispers* You're not missing much, imo.
    3. Ooh! I own her first book and haven't read her either!
    4. GILLIAAAAAAAAANNNNNN
    7. Before I Fall was pretty good. Never read Delirium though.
    10. I haz a sad. You'll love the Gallagher Girls, honest.

  30. Don't worry, Gillian, you're not alone. I haven't read SIX of those authors, either. And I've other, awful ones LOL
The Fault in our Stars is one intimidating story... but it's also hilarious and fun and worth the read. So, do try to overcome the chilling, mortifying fear and give in a shot xD
I hope to cross some of these authors of my list this year, myself! D:
