Top Ten Books That Will Make You Cry

OH LOOK, I CHEATED. QUELLE SURPRISE. This was such a tough topic because I'm the world's biggest crybaby. There are some books I just can't bring myself to read because I know I'll simply dissolve when I do(The Fault In Our Stars, Second Chance Summer, and The Book Thief, to name a few). Here are the ones I've made it through, and here are the levels of sobbery they caused me.

Ten Tissue Books

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

Ouch my heart.

If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch

This book is gorgeous, bittersweet, and ultimately uplifting.

The Impossible Knife of Memory by Laurie Halse Anderson

Another beautiful book that hurts SO BAD but has just enough light to balance the dark.

Entire Box of Tissues Books

Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

You KNOW what you did, Sarah. You know.

Endangered by Eliot Schrefer

ANIMALS IN DANGER. Animal human friendship. You are made of stone if you do not cry like a little bitch baby.

"I Need to Lie Down in a Bed of Tissues" Books

Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi

The "thing". The "thing" happened and I want it to unhappen because noooo

Lady Thief by A.C. Gaughen

Everything hurts and I'm dying.

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

*throws things* *wails* *hides under pillows*

Requires a Factory of Tissues Books

These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

Oh look, another traumatic "thing" from which I will never recover.

Kinslayer by Jay Kristoff

Nobody knows the trouble I seeeeee.... nobody knows my sorrowwwww...

"Book Me a Shuttle to Tissue Planet" Books

Allegiant by Veronica Roth

Heaving, hiccuping sobs. Choking, punched-in-the-chest, dying-from-asphyxiation sobs. Hideous, painful, don't-look-at-me-until-I-smear-the-feelings-off-my-face sobs.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling

I read this entire book on a long bus ride to camp full of fellow twelve-year-olds. I proceeded to weep copiously in front of my fellow twelve-year-olds.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling

KILL ALL MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS, WHY DON'T YOU, JO.

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

*points above* *refuses to speak of this*

If I Stay by Gayle Forman

Ughhhhhh the traumaaaaaa. Seriously, I finished this book while in the bath and I was thisclose to slipping under the water and drowning myself to end the pain (not really, but my bath was mostly saltwater by the end).

Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson

Why do they let children read these books?!

And the saddest book of all goes to... a 2014 series ender that doesn't come out for months and months that I've already read. I know, I'm a big tease, but it happens to be the SADDEST SAD TO EVER SAD. YOU WILL NOT EVEN BELIEVE IT WHEN IT HAPPENS, GUYS. You will not even believe.

  1. 1. I love how you classified your list.

    2. #TheseBrokenFeels

    3. Solid use of Doctor Who gifs. But I can't believe you did the one where Rose is banging on the wall at Torchwood. Rip my heart out, why don't you.

  2. Allegiant! I remember reading that one while I was at my desk attendant job, and having to move to the bathroom for a few minutes so I could compose myself. SO FREAKING SAD.

    And then If I Stay!

  3. WHERE DO I BEGIN?! First off, you've read ENDANGERED?! YAY, and that's on my list too, because OF COURSE. I'm dying to know what series ender you read. I can't even talk about ALLEGIANT without slumping away into a dark place. And I've seen WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS, and I will NEVER READ THE BOOK because I will cry forever. I don't think I cried in CROWN OF MIDNIGHT, but WHY, SARAH, WHY (we're talking about a ship, right?)?

  4. The "I Need to Lie Down in a Bed of Tissues" Books section made me think of "Bed of Roses" by Bon Jovi...which was my mom's favorite song :(

God, all these books were making me tear up just thinking about it and those Doctor Who GIFs! *feels the terrible sobbing snot bubbles coming on*

  5. THE DOCTOR WHO FEELS. NOOOOOO

But really. Yes. This. Particularly the Harry Potters, Mockingjay, and Crown of Midnight (WHYYYYYY????)

  6. I really need to read IF I STAY. It's moving up higher on the TBR, but I had no idea you read ENDANGERED! I've had my eye on it, I suppose I'll have to give it a chance.

Otherwise, from the ones I've read I agree wholeheartedly and the ones I have not you've already warned me about tenfold.

But I have to admit your titles made me laugh a lot even though this post was about tears.LOL

  7. I don't even want to talk about Allegiant because I don't want to be drowned away into a dark place, hah. To me that book is unexist. Yep
I remember telling my friend to read If I Stay and dared her not to cry. She told me that I was cruel for making her read such a sad book *sorry not sorry*

Oh, ye little tease. Now I'M WORRIED about a the series-ender. Please DO NOT let it be this particular series that I'm thinking, pleaaaaase.

  8. OMG, is Lady Thief really that tear worthy? Now I must read it, right now. I know I can't read it right now, but gosh darn it do I want to. I love how you categorized all the books. Now I must know what series ender you are talking about. You should tell me...

  9. Um HP7 Yes. I seriously considered sending Jo my therapy bills after she freaking KILLED all of my favorite characters. (well most of them anyhow) HP5 was hearbreaking and I did cry but just not as much as HP7. Same to Suzanne Collins for Mockingjay. Just no. Yes to If You Find Me too. Gah, that book. Allegiant, I cried a little bit. Not as much as some of the other books.

  10. Crown of Midnight and If You Find Me! All the feels. Mockingjay and If I Stay took me to tissue planet also.

  11. Great categories of tissue use! :)
Also, compliments to you superb use of Doctor Who gifs; and people say it's a happy fun show, hahahaha. ha.
The Harry Potter series never made my list because I forgot, whoops, and If I Stay is on my TBR list already, so super looking forward to crying my eyes out to that! I really wnat to read a book by Rainbow Rowell soon though, so maybe Eleanor and Park will be the one! Great list :D

  12. I agree with so many of those books, some I cried more, others I cried a lil less and others I totally ugly sobbed...
    Loved all the GIFs btw!

  13. hahaha Best classifications ever. I have so many of these I still need to read but I'll take note and supply myself with tissues before picking any of these up. :)

  14. If I Stay and HP 7 made me list too, SHE KILLED MY FAVOURITES TOO *SOBS*. I cry throughout that entire book every time I read it, mainly because I know what's coming for so many characters. These Broken Stars was really emotional read too. My TTT :)

  15. Awesome post Gillian :D I so agree with a lot of these books. <3 ELEANOR & PARK! So good. So heartbreaking. I need a book too. If You Find Me. <3 So good. And heartbreaking as well. Gah. I need sequels to everything, lol :) Thank you for sharing sweetie. <3

  16. Mockingjay was definitely a traumatic reading experience for me! I finished it in the wee hours of the morning, and just spent a good hour or so crying before getting ready for work. Seriously, that book packs an emotional punch and IT HURT ALL MY FEELS. (It's still my least favorite though!)

Also, Crown of Midnight. We don't even have to discuss the specifics, because I GET YOU GILLIAN.

  17. Okay, basically I did cry during some of those, but only the tissue planet books, and not Allegiant, because I was too busy laughing. And not Bridge to Terabithia, because I never read it. I yelled at Kinslayer, but not crying.

    1. *grumbles* Why does your blog even let me do this?

  18. YES GILLIAN I AGREE WITH ALL YOUR CHOICES! (and love how you set it up btw)
URGH crown of midnight RUINED me, If I Stay had me balling, I still can't speak of Mockingjay and These Broken Stars had me calling my friends and pleading for them to take away the pain.

  19. I like your little headings but this is making me rethink whether I want to read some of those that will send me to the tissue factory.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I agree, 100%. AND those are the best gifs for it ever....I can't even look at Rose when she starts crying, or I bawl. :(

  21. I love your list! And I cheated too. I hardly ever stick to 10 but this topic was especially hard! Yes to Eleanor & Park, Through the Ever Night, Code Name Verity, These Broken Stars, Allegiant, HP (several of them made me tear up), If I Stay, Where the Red Fern Grows, and Bridge to Terabithia. I had a couple of these on my list too! Great job!

  22. Okay, now I totally need to know what the saddest series ender ever is. What if I haven't read the first books in this series and I miss out? You're going to give me a panic attack here! :-)

  23. I am SO WITH YOU on Through the Ever Night and Lady Thief. Haven't read Into the Still Blue yet but UGH it's going to hurt me, isn't it?

I didn't know These Broken Stars had a traumatizing THING to break the feels! Augh now I'm a little scared of it. Then again, some of these books didn't make me cry, just made me kind of generally sad, so maybe I'll survive. If not, I can't say you didn't warn me!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Gahh If I stay and code name verity had me sobbing! And HP and bridge to terabithia!! bridge to terabithia is simply just depressing and i have no idea why they make kids read it!! Crown of midnight too - i wasn't sobbing, but just tearing up. I've yet to read some of these others though!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Quell surprise indeed! Also, yes to being a big 'ole crybaby (I meant me, not you, but you as well. We both get the super feelsy feels, apparently)

Before we go any further, love your categories. I can't wait for you to read Marchetta, you'll have to add a new one: Tissues-Can't-Help-Me-Now-As-I-Have-A-Massive-Sucking-Chest-Wound-Where-The-Tattered-Remains-Of-My-Heart-Reside. (Oh hell, did I make you afraid? DON'T BE AFRAID. It's a good hurt, they're amazing. )

I see a number of books on this list I have yet to read. BRING ON THE PAIN, I say! Fun fact, I got so upset re: a certain turn of events midway through Crown of Midnight, I had to quit. I keep trying to pick it back up but I just get upset again and stop. I think I'm going to wait for book three and then force myself through it. I just can't bring myself to finish given how things are and then having to wait until 3's release for any hope of improvement.

6 DAYS UNTIL THE LADY THIEF! 6 DAYS! I CAN MAKE IT! WAAAAHHHHH I WANT IT NOW. Except apparently it hurts. Yayters. WHY CAN'T THEY JUST BE HAPPY GAUGHEN?! WHY?!

Please don't talk to me about the sadness brought on by the last 4 books of Harry Potter. I still haven't recovered and all HP-related wounds are a tad fresh given recent developments that didn't happen.

I'm sorry, I am completely unaware of any of the events of Where the Red Fern Grows and Bridge to Terebithia due to extreme denial fueled by the childhood trauma that is reading those books. WHY ARE THOSE CHILDREN'S BOOKS? WHO THOUGHT THAT WAS A GOOD IDEA?!

Excellent list Gillian. Also, what is this 2014 series ender? I am so intrigued I can hardly stand it.

(Shout out to David Tennant gifs, his face, I like it. Even when it's sad. Especially when it's sad? Anyhoo, well-gifed, as per usual.)

  26. Gillian, as your friend, I must insist that you reveal to me the identity of the unnamed book.

  27. I'm dying to know the unnamed book that is coming out later this year. Please, please, please tell us!!!!
